More about Northeast Historic Film:
Northeast Historic Film (NHF) is a moving image archive, founded 30 years ago with the mission to collect, preserve, and share the moving image history of northern New England. We are located in the Alamo Theatre, a 1916 cinema building, in Bucksport, Maine. Our collections contain ten million feet of film and more than 8,000 hours of video; most of these materials are unique and irreplaceable. NHF cares for film from hundreds of northern New England places in a three-story temperature and humidity controlled vault building, which also provides state-of-the-art storage for institutions from throughout the east coast. Collectively our holdings constitute a record of 20th century regional culture seen from countless angles: the factory floor and the farm, in the woods and at sea, at home with our families and on the streets of our hometowns.
NHF has several green initiatives in place. Most recently, we began experimenting with shutting off the HVAC systems in our film vaults over night in order to save electricity. This has been highly successful, saving us money and using much less energy in the process. NHF also accepts donations of cameras, projectors, and other equipment, keeping them out of the landfill and preserving them for future generations to see. Even more importantly, the 10 million+ feet of film in our collection and the thousands of hours of video tape that we’ve collected over the past three decades was kept out of landfills and resides safely in our vaults. In the past few years, NHF invested much time and money to spray foam insulate our 100 year old building, the Alamo Theatre. This work significantly cut our heating costs and in turn, we use less heating fuel. Finally, by purchasing and renovating the Alamo Theatre in 1999, NHF saved an important historic structure in downtown Bucksport from demolition.
